Safety During Power Restoration

Safety is first and foremost in an outage or downed power line situation.

Downed power line safety

Assume that all downed power lines are live. Report downed lines to 911 and then report the downed line online, and follow these safety tips:

No person should come within 30 feet of a downed power line
If a branch or other object is in contact with a power line, do not attempt to remove it
Be aware of downed lines that may be covered up by debris or downed trees
Be careful with electric tools and stay clear of damp ground and standing puddles
If you see someone touching a downed line, do not touch them
If a power line falls on your car while you're in it, remain inside your car

Generator safety

Generators are often used during an extended outage situation. If not used correctly, generators can cause shock, fire or carbon monoxide poisoning. Follow these tips to protect yourself and our crews as we work to restore power to your home.

Preventing backfeed

Backfeed occurs when power is sent back through your home's electrical lines in reverse. This creates a dangerous level of electricity that puts our line workers at risk of severe injury.

To prevent backfeed, never connect generators (permanent or portable) directly to your home's wiring or plug into a wall outlet.

Before using a permanent generator, make sure an electrician installs a power transfer switch
Before using a portable generator, shut off the main circuit breaker in your home if you do not have a transfer switch
